The B.O.P.T.® (Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique) is a simplified prosthetic procedure that uses vertical preparation in its initial phases. Developed in the 1990s, the technique originated from clinical observations of how specific procedural steps directly influenced both the horizontal space and the marginal component of soft tissues. Over time, as the technique was refined, these initial insights were confirmed: manipulating these spaces induces a volumetric—and therefore BIOLOGICAL—adaptation in the soft tissues, promoting long-term tissue stability.
The two main components of this procedure are creating SPACE through tooth preparation, and shaping FORM through the restoration and its emergent profile angle. By leveraging these two elements, we can modulate this space in both the horizontal and sagittal planes, enabling soft tissues to expand, thicken, and occupy the space. We have termed this newly created horizontal biological width the BIOLOGICAL POLYGON.
