Using the Straight Abutment for IL® Implant Prosthetics
When we talk about prosthetic abutments, we are referring to the intermediate structure screwed into the implant platform that supports the final restoration—whether cement- or screw-retained. This component is conventionally known as the prosthetic abutment.
Over the years, implant manufacturers have designed and produced a wide variety of abutments. These serve not only to support the prosthetic restoration, but also to overcome placement errors and ensure soft tissue stability. While restoring a single implant in a non-esthetic zone is straightforward, restoring the esthetic zone—or placing multiple splinted implants—requires far greater precision. A new solution was needed that was both simple and fast: the Quick&Easy® procedure.
The inspiration for this new type of straight abutment—the Iconic Abutment®—capable of addressing both functional and esthetic challenges, stems from the B.O.P.T.® prosthetic technique pioneered by Dr. Ignazio Loi. The core elements of B.O.P.T.® are vertical preparation and respect for the biological width of the tooth. Only a vertical preparation allows the restoration to be contoured to match the adjacent teeth (shape dominance) while respecting the gingival architecture (biological polygon). Furthermore, maintaining the tooth's biological space is essential to preserving peri-prosthetic tissue stability and preventing inflammation.
This led to the creation of the straight Iconic Abutment®.
It builds upon the innovative design of the IL® implant, which uniquely features an osseointegrating thread design combined with a convergent neck. This convergent profile maintains a biological space between the restoration and the gingival margin similar to the natural biological width. With its minimally invasive design, the Iconic Abutment® replicates a vertical preparation around which the restoration can be contoured. Through its emergence profile, it shapes the soft tissue (splash effect), establishing a functional connection essential for long-term implant success.
The straight abutment is therefore the logical extension of the biological integration achieved at the neck of the IL® implant. Combined with dynamic screws, the Iconic Abutment® provides a solution for any prosthetic scenario—allowing single crowns, bridges, and full-arch restorations to be screwed directly into the implant platform without intermediate components.
